Last week was a reset. Less chasing, more choosing. This week, I want to talk about what happens after you've made that choice.

I was in a conversation recently with someone hiring for a marketing role. Nothing technical. No coding. No data science. But one of the first things they asked every candidate was: "How do you use AI in your work?"

Not whether they use it. How.

And what surprised me wasn't the question. It was how many people didn't have an answer. Not because they weren't smart or experienced, but because they'd never been asked to think about AI as a skill. They thought it was a tool you either used or didn't.

That gap, between using AI casually and understanding it intentionally, is quietly becoming one of the biggest differentiators in the job market. And it's not about being technical. It's about being AI literate!

What AI Literacy Actually Means in 2026

AI literacy isn't coding. It's not prompt engineering. It's not memorizing model names or knowing what GPT stands for.

AI literacy is the ability to understand what AI can and can't do, know when to trust its output, and make good decisions with it.

Think of it like financial literacy. You don't need to be an accountant to manage your money well. But you do need to understand interest rates, budgets, and risk. AI literacy works the same way.

Here's what it looks like in practice:

  • Knowing the limits — Understanding that AI generates patterns, not truth. It can sound right and still be wrong.

  • Evaluating output — Not blindly accepting the first answer. Asking: Does this make sense? What might it have missed?

  • Choosing when to use AI — And when not to. Not every task needs AI. The skill is knowing the difference.

  • Adapting across tools — AI isn't one product. It's a capability showing up in every platform, from email to spreadsheets to hiring software.

The U.S. Department of Labor launched a national AI literacy initiative this year. LinkedIn ranked AI literacy as one of the fastest-growing skills globally. And 72% of enterprise leaders now say AI literacy is important for day-to-day work, not just specialist roles.

This isn't a future trend. It's already here!

The Mindset Shift: From "Do I need to learn AI?" → "What kind of AI thinker am I becoming?"

Most people are still stuck on the first question. They're waiting for someone to tell them when AI is relevant to their role.

But the shift has already happened. AI is embedded in the tools you already use. The question isn't whether you need it. It's whether you can work with it thoughtfully.

The real edge isn't knowing every tool. It's developing judgment - the ability to evaluate, question, and apply AI in context.

And here's the part that changes the game: workers with AI skills are earning 56% more than peers in the same roles without those skills. Not because they're writing code. Because they're making better decisions, faster.

From consumer → to collaborator. That's the shift.

The "AI Audit" Exercise

This week, take 10 minutes and run a simple audit on your own AI literacy.

1. List every tool you use that has AI built in. Email, search, documents, scheduling, social media — more than you think.

2. For each one, ask:

  • Do I understand what the AI is doing behind the scenes?

  • Have I ever questioned its output or default suggestion?

  • Could I explain to someone else what it's good at and where it falls short?

3. Pick the one tool where you feel least confident. Spend 15 minutes this week learning what it actually does with AI. Not a tutorial. Just understanding.

4. Write one sentence: "The AI in [tool] is useful for _______, but I should double-check when _______."

That one sentence is AI literacy in action. You just moved from user to thinker.

The Interview Question That Matters: AI Literacy

“How do you evaluate and decide when to trust AI outputs in your work?”

What they’re really testing:
Can you think critically with AI, not just use it?

How to answer:
Show that you understand AI’s limits, question outputs, and make decisions with context, not blind trust.

Strong answer structure:

  • Define the context
    Where are you using AI in your work?

  • Acknowledge limitations
    AI generates patterns, not always truth

  • Explain your evaluation approach
    How you validate, cross-check, or question outputs

  • Show decision-making
    When you trust AI vs when you override it

Example Answer

“In my work, I use AI to support research and insight generation, but I don’t treat outputs as final.

I’m aware that AI is pattern-based and can sound accurate while missing context. So I usually validate outputs by cross-checking key points, asking follow-up prompts, and applying domain knowledge.

For example, when using AI for summaries or recommendations, I review what might be missing or oversimplified before using it in decisions.

So my approach is to use AI for speed, but rely on judgment for accuracy and final decisions.”
